Fighting Polio
Poliomyelitis
Poliomyelitis is highly infectious and affects the nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis. It's transmitted through contaminated food, drinking water, faeces and swimming pool water.
Someone who has been infected with Polio may experience slowly progressive muscle weakness. Often, joint pains occur in the affected limbs and increasing skeletal deformities, such as scoliosis, develop. Fatigue is often present.
Polio mainly affects people who haven't been immunised. Many parts of the world are now polio-free following successful Rotary immunisation programmes.
